What You Should Know About Windows vs Mac OS
Tuesday, January 31st, 2012The only way for the debate to be settled between Mac OS and Windows OS, is for one of them to disappear, but that is unlikely to happen. Both operating systems have benefits for certain types of people, and those people aren’t going anywhere. In many ways, it depends on how you’re going to be using your computer, as Windows is better for some applications, and Mac for others. This article is about what is best about each system.
One of the main reasons people have traditionally preferred Windows to Mac is because of compatibility issues. Windows is used a lot more often and that means that more software applications are made to be compatible with it.
Even if the software comes in a Mac version it typically runs differently and isn’t always fully compatible. Todays Mac computers, though, can simply run Windows through Bootcamp. This means that if you have a recently constructed Mac you can run Windows on it. The reverse, however, probably won’t ever be a possibility. Before, when you wanted to run Windows on your Mac, your only option was programs like Virtual PC which are completely slow and absolutely unreliable, but this isn’t the truth anymore. So if you have to read files or want to play a game that only works with Windows, you can do this on a Mac.
Beyond better price, the most important advantage that Windows offers is a better ability to make changes, customize and there are more choices available. When it comes to Mac, you are dealing with one company, Apple. When you choose a PC, though, there are a vast array of companies that make these computers–some of them are quite well known and popular while others…not so much.
The main advantage of this is that you can build your PC a piece at a time if that is something you are interested in. You can go online, for example, and buy a custom system, which not only allows you to save money, but also ensures that you’re only getting exactly what you need. There are lots of really great things about Macs, but when you buy one of their computers your only options are pretty much whatever comes in the box.
When you use computers for work or school, the chances of those computers being Windows OS based are high. If this is actually the case, then getting your own Windows OS computer is probably going to be a lot more convenient for you because you’ll be able to use the same programs at home. For one thing, it can be hard to share files with PC users if you’re on a Mac. It has never been easier to move back and forth from Mac to Windows based PC and back again because the newer software is more compatible than it has ever been and Bootcamp allows Mac users to set their computers up to run like Windows PCs. Of course, if you primarily work with programs and files that are Windows based, there isn’t going to be any advantage to choosing a Mac. Even though Macs continue to grow in popularity, most schools and companies and big groups use Windows based computers.
You are better qualified to decide on either a Mac or Windows, because you know some of the differences in the two operating systems. A Mac or a reasonably good PC will serve your needs for most tasks you will do each day, such as watching videos, chatting, running typical programs, and whatever else. After all of your research, you should limit your choices to several computers, any one of which will work for you, and then choose the one that you like best or has the best price.
